Meta policies and safeguards for elections around the world

"No tech company does more or invests more to protect elections online than Meta—not just during election periods but at all times."

—Nick Clegg, President, Global Affairs at Meta

We have around 40,000 people working on safety and security, with more than $20 billion invested in teams and technology in this area since 2016.

Access to fact-checkers

Fact-checking organizations in nearly 50 countries use WhatsApp to connect people with accurate information — including India, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico and the US. By sending these fact-checking organizations a message directly in WhatsApp, the organizations can reply by sharing a fact-checking article. You could also easily connect with them on their tiplines and Channels.

Learn more

Identifying suspicious messages

If a message or update is forwarded through a chain of five or more chats it will be labeled as: "Forwarded many times," meaning it didn't originate from a close contact. This helps slow down the spread of rumors and viral messages.

Learn more

Blocking and reporting accounts

Trusted tools like block and report help combat misinformation by helping WhatsApp identify if an account is engaging in mass messaging or coordinated abuse and conduct further investigation to prevent harm.

Learn more

Connect with WhatsApp local fact-checking partners to verify messages.

People who use WhatsApp can flag potential misinformation to trusted fact-checking organizations in the country where the message originated. By sending these fact-checking organizations a message directly in WhatsApp, the organizations can reply by sharing a fact-checking article.

INCREASING TRANSPARENCY

We have advanced security operations to take down manipulation campaigns and identify emerging threats.

Every political and social issue ad that runs on Facebook and Instagram is stored in a searchable Ad Library for seven years. We offer tools to help journalists, researchers and policymakers conduct analysis and learn more.

Learn more

To run a political or social issue ad, advertisers must go through our authorization process, which includes proving who they are and where they live.

Learn more

Ads about social issues, elections or politics include “Paid for by” disclaimers to show who’s behind the ad. US advertisers must now provide additional information, like a Federal Election Commission ID or Tax-ID number.

Learn more

We show you the confirmed owner and locations of Facebook Pages, and we label state-controlled media in the US. For Instagram accounts with large audiences, you can see information such as the country where it is located.

Learn more

You can turn off social issue, electoral or political ads with one switch.
