Women journalists and activists

Journalists and activists use Meta technologies and programs to connect with people and share stories. Because women face a higher risk of gender-based online violence, we’ve taken steps to encourage safe interactions on Meta technologies as women journalists and activists do their important work.

Our technologies offer safeguards to protect your information, accounts and contacts. Many of our safeguards are platform-specific, so we encourage you to explore features for the ones you use.

Bolster security on Facebook and Instagram with two-factor authentication. Doing so will require confirmation each time access is attempted from an unfamiliar device.

To ensure private communication with sources, WhatsApp offers end-to-end encryption by default. You can also encrypt conversations within Messenger by toggling conversation settings.

Learn more about reporting abusive content, moderating comments and using built-in security checkups. Familiarity with these tools helps you have more control of your safety on Facebook and other Meta technologies.

Women activists

Digital platforms fuel social movements and drive political change. Meta provides an accessible way to release information and rally around causes that matter to you. And as digital activism evolves, so do our security tools.

As a woman activist, you may be an elevated target. We encourage you to take advantage of security features on Facebook and Instagram to protect you and your accounts. You can control how your location appears if you’re posting from a sensitive area.

To communicate with others in your group or organization by secure messaging, make use of WhatsApp's default end-to-end encryption. And since activism is often group-based, you can divide the management of your Pages and Groups on Facebook.
